Former Chico Mayor Struck While Riding Unicycle

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. (May 2, 2024) – A suspected DUI driver struck former Chico Mayor Randall Stone on Saturday as he rode his unicycle in a crosswalk at Warner Street and Ivy Street near Big Chico Creek in Chico, Butte County.

The car versus unicycle crash occurred at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27th, near Cal State Chico, according to Action News Now.

Lexy Anne Cosper, 29, was allegedly driving under the influence when she drove through a stop sign and struck the victim at approximately 35 mph in the crosswalk. The victim was thrown off his electric unicycle and fell down onto his hands and face. Meanwhile, his six-year-old son was riding behind him escaped harm, but witnessed the violent crash.

The victim was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey charged the suspect with felony DUI after determining she was nearly five times over the legal blood-alcohol limit at the time of the crash. The woman is also charged with DUI causing injury as well as sentence enhancements for having a high level of alcohol content in her system as well as causing great bodily injury to her victim who had severe facial injuries.

Authorities have surveillance footage of the crash that shows the victim riding an electric unicycle in the crosswalk at the transition. The suspect rolls past the stop sign and fails to slow down before hitting the unicyclist and just barely missing the child.

The woman’s bail was set at $125,000, but she remains in Butte County Jail until her next court appearance scheduled for May 8th.

The case remains under investigation.
