Gwendolyn Pointer Killed in Pedestrian Hit-and-Run; Suspect Arrested
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 10, 2021) – Kateara Treggs, 26, of Inglewood, was arrested on hit-and-run charges following a fatal pedestrian accident on Monday in the Leimert Park area.
The motorist reportedly fled the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident without stopping to help the victim.
Gwendolyn Pointer, 60, of Baldwin Hills, died in the collision about 2:50 a.m. on August 9th on Crenshaw Boulevard, just south of Coliseum Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Pedestrian Struck on Crenshaw Boulevard
Pointer was traveling southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard when she stopped at the intersection with 39th Street. She exited her vehicle to attend to a cat lying in the roadway. Meanwhile, Kateara Treggs was heading southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard towards the intersection when she switched lanes to avoid hitting the back of Pointer’s vehicle. Instead, she reportedly struck or ran over the victim.
Following the collision, the driver stopped and exited her vehicle. She picked up a piece of her vehicle that fell off when she struck the pedestrian.
Treggs saw the victim lying in the road suffering from major injuries, but fled the scene without offering help or calling 911.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and were unable to save Pointer. The woman died at the scene.
Meanwhile, police arrested Treggs a few hours later at 6:30 a.m. the same day on felony hit-and-run charges. Police retrieved her vehicle as evidence. However, they released the suspect from jail the later the same day, the LAPD said Tuesday.
On Dec. 6, Treggs is scheduled to appear at the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division detectives are investigating the collision.
