Man Struck and Killed by Van in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. (May 11, 2022) – A 66-year-old man sleeping in the bushes near Pacific Coast Highway and Santiago Avenue died early Tuesday when a van ran off the roadway and hit him.
The collision occurred about 1:50 a.m. on May 10th, near the Recreation Park Golf Course, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Long Beach Police Department officers responded to the crash and located the white Dodge van crashed into a stone wall. The vehicle had been traveling westbound on PCH when it hit a curb on the north side of the roadway. The vehicle went over a flower bed and overturned into the bushes before it sideswiped the wall.
They initially believed there were no injuries involved, but as a tow truck began removing the vehicle they discovered an unconscious male pedestrian underneath the vehicle, police said.
Man Sleeping in Bushes Dies in Long Beach Crash
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded, but it was too late. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will be released after family members are notified.
Meanwhile, there is an ongoing investigation into the collision.
The man driving the van stopped and is cooperating with the police investigation.
Authorities will determine if other factors such as distracted driving, impaired driving or speed contributed to the Long Beach crash.
