Major Injury Crash in Mendota at California Avenue and Derrick Avenue
MENDOTA, Calif. (July 5, 2022) — A woman is dead and seven others were injured Tuesday morning in a Mendota car accident at the intersection of West California Avenue and Derrick Avenue (Highway 33) near West Panoche Road.
The Fresno County collision occurred about 4:48 a.m. on July 5th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported the drivers of a 2003 Nissan Sentra and a 2001 Toyota Sienna collided at the intersection.
2-Vehicle Crash at Mendota Intersection
Alberto Rojas, 32, of Fresno, was driving the Nissan with three passengers when he came to a stop at the intersection, He reportedly entered the southbound lane of Highway 33 in the path of an oncoming southbound Toyota driven by Santos Valentin, 55, of Mendota. The Toyota also had three passengers at the time of the crash.
The Toyota crashed into the right side of the Nissan. All eight people in the two vehicles suffered minor to major injuries. A helicopter transported a 32-year-old woman from the Nissan to Community Regional Hospital. She later died at the Fresno hospital. Alberto Rojas and one of his passengers also had major injuries. His third passenger had minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver in the Toyota and one of his passengers both had minor injuries. However, two other passengers from the Toyota were transported to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno for treatment of moderate injuries.
Investigators are working on the case to determine fault.
