3 Dead, 2 Injured in Modesto Crash
MODESTO, Calif. (March 6, 2023) — A fatal Modesto rollover crash happened Monday at Elm Avenue and Orange Avenue.
The two-vehicle collision occurred about 2:21 p.m. on March 6th, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both of the vehicles overturned and one hit an electrical pole during the traffic accident.
The drivers of a 2020 Dodge Ram truck and a 2012 Dodge SUV collided at the intersection.
There are no stop signs on Elm Avenue, but there are posted stop signs on Orange Avenue. The SUV was reportedly heading southbound on Elm Avenue when the eastbound pickup truck allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way to the other motorist. The pickup truck drove into the path of the southbound SUV on Elm Avenue, the CHP said.
Two men and a woman from the Dodge SUV all died in the crash. They were later identified as Maria Cruz Alvarez, 58, Armando Vega, 56, and Jesus Vega-Cruz, 26. All three were residents of Patterson, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.
Meanwhile, driver Mario Estrada, 20, of Crows Landing, and his passenger, Amy Gaspar, 20, of Ceres, from the pickup truck, both survived with minor injuries.
Authorities requested two ground ambulances and one helicopter ambulance at the scene.
The vehicles overturned during the crash and were towed from the roadway after the collision.
Investigators are working on the case and will determine fault for the Modesto crash on Elm Avenue.

There were 1,726 injury and fatality crashes in Modesto in 2020, according to the Office of Traffic Safety. Statistics also show that 174 of these collisions involved speed and 203 involved alcohol consumption as factors. Police will piece together all evidence to determine fault and if any charges should be filed.
