Monterey Fatal DUI Wrong-Way Crash Highway 1 and Highway 68

Man, 68, Killed in Monterey Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 1 Near Highway 68

MONTEREY, CA (May 6, 2023) – A DUI wrong-way crash killed one person on Highway 1 near Highway 68 in Monterey.

According to the KRON 4 News and KSBW News, the tragic accident took place early Saturday. Officers reported the wreck on May 6 at around 3:45 a.m.

The incident began when a Toyota Camry was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Highway 1 near Highway 68 in Monterey. At the same time, a Mitsubishi was going south.

DUI Driver Hits Another Car

The California Highway Patrol said the Toyota then slammed head-on into the Mitsubishi. Both cars ended up heavily damaged due to the impact of the collision.

Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the 69-year-old man driving the Mitsubishi dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.

Meanwhile, CHP believed that the wrong-way driver was under the influence when the accident occurred. Officers forced the southbound lanes of Highway 1 to shut down for a time following the wreck.

The cause of the fatal Monterey crash is still under investigation.
