Johnson Attorneys Group’s Never Drink and Drive Scholarship finalist, Alice P. is studying business administration at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo. The 19-year-old from Menifee, California is working towards a career in human resources.

She is one of several finalists chosen by our law firm for the annual competition every spring. Our friends at Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in California will share the name of the winner on Friday. We are sharing the stories from our finalists throughout the week.

“This week is spring break for many college-aged students and we hope to bring awareness to young people and encourage them to never drink and drive,” said Attorney James Johnson, founder of Johnson Attorneys Group.

Here is the essay submission from Alice for the Johnson Attorneys Group scholarship competition.:

As a teenager one of the highlights of your life is finally getting your driver’s license and being able to go places without the watchful eye of your parents. But even before getting to that stage, every parent has had “the talk” with their child about safe driving, including the dangers of drunk driving.

It’s recognized that once a person gets their driver’s license, they feel that they have other freedoms as well, including being able to start drinking among many teenagers. In my high school years one of the
biggest incidents was the death of one of my classmates in a drunk driving accident.

My classmate had gotten his license three months prior to the accident, and was unfortunately presumed to be driving under the influence. When we got the announcement at school it felt unreal. Every student was in shock and didn’t know how to process the news. A well known classmate had just died in an unfortunate accident, and I couldn’t help but wonder how different it would be if he hadn’t been drinking that night.

A teenager with so much potential had died and wouldn’t be able to know what college he would go to, what his future career would be, or even if he would have gotten married or not. Drunk driving is a dangerous disease and needs to be spoken about. In this context, drunk driving seminars or informationals would be extremely beneficial in high school settings.

Teenagers need to know how dangerous it truly is not only to themselves if they drink, but to others on the road as well. As one of those teenagers who was extremely excited to get her license I never thought about the dangers of the
road, just about my newfound freedom. But after the incident with my classmate I saw driving under a new viewpoint. Drunk driving is a recklessness that needs to be prevented at all costs, for ourselves and for others.
