Never Drink and Drive Scholarship Finalist Bryce Lost a Friend

Bryce B. Scholarship Finalist

Johnson Attorneys Group’s Never Drink and Drive Scholarship finalist, Bryce B. is studying business, management and marketing at San Diego Miramar College this fall.

He is one of several finalists chosen by our law firm for the annual competition every spring. Our friends at Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in California will share the name of the winner on Friday. We are sharing the stories from our finalists throughout the week.

“This week is spring break for many college-aged students and we hope to bring awareness to young people and encourage them to never drink and drive,” said Attorney James Johnson, founder of Johnson Attorneys Group.

Here is the essay submission from Bryce for the Johnson Attorneys Group scholarship competition.:

Drunk driving took the life of one of my close friends. I had been going to school with this friend since the 7th grade and he was one of those people who knew everyone and would light up a room by simply walking in it I vividly remember the night I heard about it, I had not talked to him in probably a year due to us attending different schools but I had seen him the day of due to an alumni water polo game. There’s a picture of me hugging him celebrating our reunion just 6 hours before he was taken from this world. I would give anything to go back to that moment and appreciate it more. The funeral had people coming home from all over the world, friends leaving their schools, other states, and even countries, it felt like the world had been put on pause, all back to California to celebrate the life of a 19-year-old who was taken due to someone else’s decision to drink and drive. I honestly still can’t believe he’s gone.

Everyone should care about drunk driving, this story is not uncommon, there are an estimated 1,069 deaths from drunk driving each year. But this isn’t just a number that 1069 daughters, fathers, friends, and all sorts of loved ones. I used to think this issue didn’t affect me, but that changed in one phone call, it could happen to anyone, any time, all he was doing was walking on the sidewalk. People should care because there are no second chances, drunk driving takes lives.

A way I have raised awareness about drinking and driving in my community is by participating in putting up banners and posters advertising the effects of drinking and driving following the death of my friend. Another good way to raise awareness about the effects of drunk driving is to participate in or organize community events such as fairs, parades, or health expos. Set up booths with informative materials, interactive activities, and resources that promote responsible drinking habits and discourage driving under the influence.
