Man Struck by LAPD Cruiser in Multi-Vehicle Crash
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (April 30, 2024) — A police vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Monday during a multi-vehicle traffic accident at Gower Street and Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood.
Six other people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the crash at around 4 p.m. on Monday, April 29th, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Just prior to the collision, LAPD deputies in a police cruiser were reportedly honking to clear the intersection in the northbound lanes of Gower Street, KTLA reports. A man driving a white Mercedes told the news station all the cars stopped, but a westbound car traveling on Santa Monica Boulevard collided with the police vehicle, the LAPD reports. The police cruiser reportedly spun out and struck the pedestrian as well as the Mercedes and possibly one other vehicle.
The pedestrian became trapped underneath the police vehicle. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the intersection and freed the victim. The critically injured man was then taken to a hospital, police said. However, the victim later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Authorities are working to determine fault for the collision.
Meanwhile, the name of the man who died will be released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner after relatives are notified.
Finally, witnesses to the crash should call the LAPD’s West Traffic Division at 213-473-0222.
