
Pedestrian Dies in Hit-and-run Accident; Suspect Arrested
DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (May 15, 2023) — Peter Heaton, 86, of Desert Hot Springs, died Saturday in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident on Palm Drive.
The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on May 13th, according to the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
The Desert Hot Springs Police Department responded after a 911 call alerted them to the crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian at Palm Drive and Hacienda Avenue.
The driver had been traveling northbound on Palm Drive approaching Hacienda Avenue when for unknown reasons the vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk. The car struck the 86-year-old man who was standing near the bus stop on Palm Drive, according to a report by News Channel 3.
The driver failed to stop and help the man identified as Peter Heaton. The motorist continued driving and fled the scene. Meanwhile, the pedestrian suffered major injuries and died at the scene.
Police later located the suspect and arrested the person on hit and run charges. The unidentified motorist was booked at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
