Man, 79, Struck and Killed in San Jose is Identified
SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 3, 2024) — Qinghua Liu, 79, of San Jose, died in a pedestrian accident Sunday night on Saratoga Avenue near Highway 280 in San Jose.
The collision occurred at around 7:40 p.m. in the 500 block of Saratoga Avenue and the victim sustained major injuries and died at the scene, according to the San Jose Police Department.
Police told The Mercury News the deadly crash occurred in the southbound lane of Saratoga Avenue between Kiely Boulevard and Moorpark Avenue.
A driver in a black 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage was traveling northbound when they reportedly struck an unidentified man as he was crossing eastbound on Saratoga Avenue in the north crosswalk, the San Jose Police Department said. Authorities believe that Liu was crossing against a solid red hand traffic signal at the time of the collision.
The roadway was shut down for roughly two hours on Sunday night while police conducted an investigation into the collision. Drugs and or alcohol were not suspected.
This is the 11th fatal collision and 11th traffic death of 2024, the SJPD reports. Also, it is the 7th pedestrian death so far in 2024.
