Ryder Shoup, Eileen Crawford Both Killed in Crash

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (April 12, 2024) — Ryder Shoup, 16, and Eileen Crawford, 67, both died in a fiery, head-on crash Wednesday morning on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway and Palomar Street in Chula Vista.

Thomas Ryder Shoup (aka Ryder Day) was a student at Mar Vista High School.

The fatal two-vehicle collision occurred at around 3:24 a.m. on April 10th, south of Camino De La Plaza, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials were alerted around 3:21 a.m. that there was a red or black Honda Civic traveling at 75 to 80 mph against traffic in the southbound lanes of the I-5 freeway.

The wrong-way driver, later identified as Eileen Crawford, reportedly collided with a Dodge Challenger driven by Ryder Shoup. The Dodge reportedly caught on fire after the collision. Witnesses told dispatchers that no one exited the vehicle.

The Chula Vista Police Department responded and located the woman unconscious in the Honda near the center divide and Palomar Street off ramp.

Paramedics responded, but unfortunately both drivers died following the crash.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Ryder Shoup was played football and was a sophomore at Mar Vista High School. He also worked as a lifeguard in the community, his school principal said.

There is a GoFundMe account to raise money for the victim’s funeral and family including the teen’s son, Marcelo and his girlfriend, Eliana.

Meanwhile, police diverted traffic off the freeway to L Street to allow a cleanup and the investigation into the Chula Vista crash on the 5 Freeway and Palomar Street.
