SAN JOSE: 35 Sickened at Shadow Brook Swim Club Swimming Pool Toxic Chemical GasShadow Brook Swim Club Chemical Gas Exposure

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 15, 2018) – Some 35 people, mostly teenagers and young people, were taken to  hospitals following exposure at the Shadow Brook Swim Club to a toxic gas created by an accidental mixture of swimming pool chemicals, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.

The incident took place about 12:10 p.m. at 1079 Shadow Brook Drive off of Almaden Expressway. A pool worker reportedly mixed up chlorine and muriatic acid creating a toxic yellow cloud or chlorine gas that spread over the pool and its deck exposing dozens of people. The swimmers, the pool worker and others on the  pool deck suffered nausea, dizziness, breathing problems, vomiting and other problems due to the exposure.

Emergency responders decontaminated those affected by having them strip down and using fire hoses to wash them off behind blue tarps at the Almaden Valley pool. They were given white hazmat suits to wear as they waited to be taken to nine separate hospitals in ten ambulances. Both county and San Jose firefighters responded to the hazmat situation and warned that this dangerous chemical combination could have been fatal.

Firefighters told reporters that the chemical gas is one that has been used as a weapon in the past.
