Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-run Crash at Highland Street in Shelltown
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Dec. 3, 2021) — Santiago Ibarra Mendoza, 76, died last month in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident on Highland Street in the Shelltown neighborhood near National City in San Diego County.
Police are now seeking the public’s help identifying the suspected hit-and-run driver who fled without stopping to help the victim, a news release issued by San Diego County Crime Stoppers said.
The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, on North Highland Street near Eta Street, San Diego police said.
Santiago Ibarra Mendoza was walking across North Highland Avenue prior to the crash. A driver in a small light-colored SUV similar to a Nissan Juke struck the victim in the roadway. They believe the vehicle is a 2010 model or newer. The vehicle is likely to have damage to its driver’s side front fender and mirror.
“The driver did not stop to check on the victim or call for help and fled the scene immediately,” the release said. Meanwhile, paramedics responded and transported the injured man to a hospital where he died the following day.
Finally, there is a $1,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers. To be eligible, the information provided must lead to an arrest in the case.
