Man, 59, killed in Lake County car accident on Highway 20
LAKE, Calif., (February 19, 2024) – Serhii Kalynovskyi, 59, and Evaristo Hernandez, 43, both died last Monday in a crash involving a suspected DUI driver on Highway 20 in Lake County.
The deadly, two-vehicle collision occurred at around 6:24 a.m. on Feb. 12th, near Upper Lake and east of Witter Springs Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Press Democrat and Lake County News.
The 59-year-old Miranda man and the 43-year-old Ukiah man from the suspect’s vehicle, both died following the violent crash, CHP officials said.
A 44-year-old Ukiah man suspected of being under the influence was traveling westbound on Highway 20 in a 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup truck with two passengers.
The motorist reportedly swerved or attempted to pass another vehicle and moved over into oncoming lane traffic. The pickup crashed head-on into Serhii Kalynovskyi’s 2011 Toyota Prius.
Two people died in the crash including Evaristo Hernandez, 43, who was a passenger in the Nissan and Serhii Kalynovski. The Nissan’s driver and a second passenger sustained major injuries in the crash.
Police responded to the scene and determined the driver in the Nissan was driving under the influence, but due to his injuries he was airlifted to a hospital. His passenger who survived was also taken to a hospital.
The traffic accident is under investigation.
