Driver Faces Vehicular Manslaughter, DUI charges
SAN MATEO, Calif., (September 29, 2021) – Tapaita Stovall, 40, of San Mateo, died Monday at the hospital following a 3-vehicle San Mateo crash the previous day at Santa Inez Avenue and Humboldt Street.
The 40-year-old San Mateo woman was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver identified as Tuuika Salt. The 24-year-old San Mateo woman reportedly had a blood-alcohol content that was 2.5 times the legal limit, according to the East Bay Times.
Police arrested the driver of the vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence. When her passenger died at the hospital, police added gross vehicular manslaughter charges to the driver, police said.
Deadly DUI Crash at San Mateo Intersection
Police and firefighters responded to the multi-vehicle crash about 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26th at the San Mateo intersection.
Authorities conducted field sobriety tests on Tuuika Salt, 24, before they arrested her and booked her into county’s Maple Street jail on the same night.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported Tapaita Stovall to a hospital where she later died the next day.
The deadly crash remains under investigation by police.
