Man fixing trailer hitch is struck, killed on San Ysidro freeway
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2021) — Timothy McGregor, 78, of San Diego, died Saturday on state Route 905 Freeway in San Ysidro crash when a driver struck a boat trailer he was attempting to reattach.
The collision happened about 6:43 a.m. on Oct. 30th on the westbound SR-905 near Beyer Boulevard and the Interstate 5 Freeway in San Ysidro, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.
The San Diego man killed by a passing motorist that hit the boar trailer as he was trying to reattach it to the Chevrolet pickup truck he had been riding in.
Prior to the deadly pedestrian accident, the man was riding in a pickup truck as a passenger. The driver reportedly struck a bump on the freeway. This caused the tow hitch to detach from the small fishing boat it was towing. The driver pulled over to the shoulder of the freeway. Timothy Wayne McGregor got out of the vehicle to reattach the hitch to the boat trailer, authorities said. However, the boat trailer was reportedly sticking out into the slow lane. An oncoming Honda CRV struck the back of the trailer and pushed the trailer and pickup into the guardrail. During the crash the man was hit. The boat fell into the roadway.
The pickup truck wound up on top of a guardrail and the Honda suffered major front-end damage in the crash. It’s unknown if anyone else suffered injuries in the collision at this time.
The California Highway Patrol is heading up the investigation into liability for the crash.
