Fatal Collision on I-5 Freeway in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (April 10, 2024) — Two people died in a crash involving a wrong-way driver Wednesday morning on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway and Palomar Street in Chula Vista.

The fatal two-vehicle collision occurred at around 3:24 a.m. on April 10th, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials were alerted around 3:21 a.m. that there was a red or black Honda Civic traveling at 75 to 80 mph against traffic in the southbound lanes of the I-5 freeway. The wrong-way driver reportedly collided with an oncoming vehicle and the victim’s vehicle caught on fire. Witnesses told dispatchers that no one exited the vehicle and the Chula Vista Police Department was on its way.

Upon arrival at the scene, police located one person unconscious in the Honda near the center divide and Palomar Street off ramp.

Paramedics responded, but unfortunately both drivers died following the crash.

Meanwhile, police diverted traffic off the freeway to L Street to allow a cleanup and the investigation into the Chula Vista crash on the 5 Freeway and Palomar Street.
