Bicyclist, 77, Seriously Injured in Crash; Suspect Arrested

CARLSBAD, Calif. (March 27, 2023) — A 77-year-old man riding a bicycle was seriously injured Friday in a hit-and-run crash on Aviara Parkway in Carlsbad.

Police later located the suspect and arrested the person on suspicion of drunken driving.

The crash occurred around 1:51 p.m. on March 24th on Aviara Parkway near Black Rail Road, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

Authorities found the elderly man and his bicycle down in the roadway. Paramedics responded and rushed him by ambulance to a trauma center. He suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, police said.

Police Arrest Suspected DUI Driver

Meanwhile, not long after the collision, police located the suspect, Lawrence Perez, 34, of Carlsbad, in the 1300 block of Laurel Tree Lane. He was found near Palomar Airport Road roughly two miles from the crash scene, police said.

Authorities reported the driver showed symptoms of alcohol intoxication. Police arrested the man for driving under the Influence and hit and run, causing injury, police said.

They booked Lawrence Perez at the Vista Detention Facility where he was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The investigation into the crash determined that Lawrence Perez was at fault. Police say he struck the cyclist from behind, causing the elderly man to be thrown off the bicycle.
