2 Killed in Crash with Stolen Vehicle; Driver Arrested for Murder
OLIVEHURST, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2021) – Police arrested Chase Hammonds, 25, on multiple charges including two counts of murder after he crashed a stolen vehicle into another motorist at Highway 70 and Highway 65 in Olivehurst.
The young man is charged with two counts of murder, felony hit-and-run, felony evading, auto theft and crossing a divided highway, according to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office and Action News Now.
Two people died in a head-on collision with the stolen truck driven by Chase Hammonds.
The deadly crash happened on Wednesday, Sept. 15th, according to California Highway Patrol.
Sheriff’s deputies were pursuing a stolen truck towing a trailer driven by Chase Hammonds around 2:08 p.m.
Deputies requested CHP officers take over the pursuit. It continued at slow speeds until about 2:16 p.m. That’s when the stolen Ford crossed over the divided highway and drove the wrong way on Highway 65 at Highway 70.
As the truck traveled northbound on Highway 70 in the southbound lane and crashed head-on into a Dodge Durango.
Mother and Daughter Killed in Olivehurst Crash
Upon impact, the Dodge overturned and a driver and passenger became trapped. Deanna Hernandez, and the passenger, Cary Ojeda, both suffered major injuries in the crash. The mother and daughter were transported to a hospital where they later died.
Meanwhile, the trailer of the stolen truck hit a Chevy Silverado, but there were no injuries.
Also, police report the driver of the Ford initially fled the scene. However, sheriff’s deputies later caught up with the suspect and arrested him.
Chase Hammonds was arrested as the suspect driving the stolen vehicle. He also faces multiple violations of probation warrants due to prior stolen vehicle cases, according to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.
Hammonds was taken to the hospital for treatment and will be booked into jail after he is released.
