Wrong-Way Car Accident on I-580 in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. (March 19, 2024) — One person is dead and three were critically injured after wrong-way driver crash on the Interstate 580 Freeway, just east of the westbound San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge entrance.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred on the westbound I-580 at around 4:31 a.m. on March 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Police were pursing a white utility pickup truck when it veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a gray Lexus sedan and a white utility van.
The vehicles were blocking the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes of the freeway and police issued a SigAlert.
Paramedics from the Oakland Fire Department responded to help those injured in the collision including one driver with major injuries and another who died at the crash scene. Two people from the suspect’s vehicle also had major injuries.
Investigators are working to determine fault for the Oakland crash on the 580 Freeway.
